For mail requests, send a copy of your government-issued ID, a $2 processing fee, and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Records Section. Include the name and date of the person you are inquiring about, along with any case numbers or arrest dates you have. Mail requests take about 8 business days to process.
The $2 fee covers the basic records check. Additional copies cost extra. In-person requests with valid ID are the fastest option. You can usually get basic information the same day if the records are readily available.
Yonkers PD also handles FOIL requests for arrest reports, incident reports, and booking documentation. Submit FOIL requests in writing to the department. The five-business-day acknowledgment rule applies here just like everywhere else in New York.
Yonkers Detention and Jail Information
Yonkers operates its own city jail. Call 914-377-7252 for the detention unit. People arrested in Yonkers may be held at the city jail for up to 12 months depending on the charges and sentence. This is a local facility, not a county or state institution.
For longer sentences or when the city jail is at capacity, inmates transfer to the Westchester County Department of Correction. The county runs its own facility that holds inmates from across Westchester. Contact the county DOC for custody inquiries about transferred inmates.
Bail information comes through the court clerk after arraignment. The judge sets bail at the initial court appearance. If bail is paid, the person is released. If not, they stay in custody until the next court date or until bail conditions change.
Certificates of Conduct in Yonkers
Yonkers PD issues Certificates of Conduct, sometimes called good conduct letters. These documents show whether someone has a local arrest record. The Records Section handles these requests Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The fee is $30 for Yonkers residents and $60 for non-residents. Processing takes 5 to 7 business days. You need a valid ID to apply. This is a city-specific check and only covers Yonkers. It does not include arrests from other jurisdictions.
Certificates of Conduct are different from DCJS criminal history checks, which cover the entire state. If you need a full state record, the DCJS search is the way to go. The Yonkers certificate only tells you about local records.
